The creek of the same name rises in Carnarvon National Park. It then flows through neighbouring Wealwandangie, entering the locality of Cona Creek from the south-east and flowing through it to exit in the north-west (Lochington/Minerva).[3]
The Dawson Developmental Road passes through the locality from north (Minerva) to west (Nandowrie).[3]

The locality presumably takes its name from the creek itself. Cona is said to be an Aboriginal word meaning mud.[4]
