The station opened on 23 September 1908.[2] With the privatization of Japanese National Railways (JNR) on 1 April 1987, the station came under the control of JR East.[2]
Station numbering was introduced on 20 August 2016 with Aihara being assigned station number JH29.[3][4]

Passenger statistics
In fiscal 2019, the station was used by an average of 10,407 passengers daily (boarding passengers only).[5]
