Abdul Aziz bin Juned (born 22 December 1941) is a Bruneian aristocrat, politician and muslim scholar who is the current Grand Mufti of Brunei.[1][2][3] As a Grand Mufti, he is the most senior and most influential Sunni Muslim religious and legal authority in the nation. He was appointed by the Sultan in 1994.[4]

Education

Early education for Abdul Aziz was received in Brunei, after which he completed his studies at Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah in Singapore in 1955, Malaya Islamic College in 1962, and Al-Azhar University in Egypt in 1968.[5]

Career

Abdul Aziz held a number of positions prior to becoming the state mufti, including those of religious officer in the Ministry of Religious Affairs in 1970, information and tabligh supervisor in 1971, senior religious officer in 1976, Deputy Grand Kadi in 1983, Director of Sharia Affairs in 1986, and Deputy State Mufti in 1989. He holds a number of positions in the Government of Brunei, including those of Member of the Privy Council since 17 April 1984, Member of the Succession Council since 1978, and Member of the Islamic Religious Council since 1971.[5]

Additionally, he frequently accepts invitations from Ministries and Institutions of Higher Education both domestically and internationally to present working papers at conferences, seminars, and dialogues as well as to provide lectures for events that coincide with and also satisfy invitation from overseas.[5]

Personal life

Born on 22 December 1941 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, in Kampong Setia Pahlawan Lama. He married to Datin Hajah Maznah binti Haji Mohammad, and the couple has three kids—two boys and a girl—together.[5] Among his children is Hanan, deputy dean at the UNISSA Expertise.[6]

On 26 March 1983, he was bestowed the Manteri title of Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Udana Khatib, promoted to Pehin Tuan Imam on 6 November 1984 and Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja on 9 May 1996. Throughout his career, he has earned the following awards and honours:[5]
