The 2023 Narracan state supplementary election was held on 28 January 2023 to elect the next member for the electoral district of Narracan in the Victorian Legislative Assembly, following the death of a nominated candidate prior to the 2022 Victorian state election.
Wayne Farnham retained the seat for the Liberal Party despite a 10.6% decrease in the party's first preference vote.[1][2]
Background
On 21 November 2022, it was reported that the Nationals candidate for the district of Narracan, Shaun Gilchrist, had been found dead. Under electoral law, this means that the lower house election for Narracan was declared as "failed" by the Victorian Electoral Commission.[3] A supplementary election was held for that seat at 28 January 2023.[4] The Legislative Council (upper house) election for that district (which is part of the Eastern Victoria Region), was held as scheduled on 26 November.
The Labor Party and the Nationals did not contest the supplementary election, and the Animal Justice Party and Family First Victoria nominated new candidates.[5]
