On June 7, 1953, a violent and catastrophic tornado hit Valley and Sherman counties near Arcadia, Nebraska, United States. This tornado was part of a storm that went across many states and was very deadly. The tornado changed the town of Arcadia and the people who lived there. Even though the tornado went through fields and countryside it is still one of the tornadoes, in Nebraska history because it killed 11 people. People mostly remember this tornado because it destroyed one house and killed people from the same family.
Tornado summary
The weather conditions over the Great Plains on June 7 1953 were very unstable.[1] A powerful shortwave system moving over the Rocky Mountains caused low-pressure systems to form in eastern Colorado.[2] This happened along with an air mass and very steep temperature changes in the air above the area. These conditions led to the development of powerful thunderstorms, in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa.[2] At 3:15 PM CST, a strong dangerous spinning wind came down just south of Arcadia, Nebraska.[3] It quickly crossed the Middle Loup River.[3] People who saw the storm coming said it twisted violently looking like a "whip hitting the ground".[4]
Tracking northeast the tornado started by going through a cemetery. It broke trees and pulled headstones out of the ground.[4] Then it hit the farmstead. At that place a house was partly destroyed. The frame of the house was. Taken off the base. The tornado got faster as it grew wider. It was a mile wide which is about 440 yards.[3] It destroyed a house made of concrete completely. The house was gone just the ground was left. The tornado picked up a car and flew it through the air. The car landed in a hill 300 yards away.[5]
The storm achieved its peak F4 intensity as it reached the homestead of the Madsen family. The tornado completely annihilated the Madsen farmhouse. The violent winds swept the entire structure off its foundation, completely disintegrating the debris and leaving absolutely nothing intact. All ten occupants inside the home at the moment of impact were killed instantly or fatally thrown hundreds of yards into the surrounding fields. After obliterating the Madsen farmstead, the vortex moved northeast across rural Valley County, damaging an additional home in the Hays Creek area and destroying outbuildings on 16 separate farms before lifting.

The area, around Arcadia after the storm looked really bad. A tornado moved through for 10 miles. It destroyed farms knocked down barns and ruined crops. People who help during emergencies, local neighbors and volunteers rushed to the countryside to look through the mess. They found 11 people who died and 5 others who were badly hurt in the area where the tornado passed.
The emotional heart of the disaster was the loss of the Madsen family. Out of the 11 people who died because of the tornado 10 were from three generations of the Madsens. This left the rural area completely shocked. The only other person who died was, at a farm, where an old man died from serious injuries after his house was destroyed.
Financially, the tornado inflicted an estimated $500,000 in property and agricultural damage, which translates to millions in contemporary valuation. Because 16 distinct farming operations lost their primary barns, grain storage, or heavy equipment, the local agricultural economy faced an intense multi-month rebuilding process. Coming just one day before the catastrophic Flint-Beecher F5 tornado in Michigan and two days before the Worcester F4 tornado in Massachusetts, the Arcadia disaster remains etched in history as the tragic opening act of one of the most violent 48-hour stretches in American meteorological history.
