Τεταρτογενής περίοδος

Η Τεταρτογενής περίοδος είναι η τρέχουσα και η πιο πρόσφατη από τις τρεις περιόδους του καινοζωικού αιώνα στη γεωλογική κλίμακα της Διεθνούς Επιτροπής στη Στρωματογραφία.[1] Ακολουθεί τη Νεογενή περίοδο. Εκτείνεται χρονικά από το 2,588±0,005 εκατομμύρια χρόνια πριν μέχρι σήμερα. Η τεταρτογενής περίοδος χωρίζεται σε δύο εποχές, τη Πλειστόκαινο και την Ολόκαινο.[1]

Η τεταρτογενής περίοδος χαρακτηρίζεται από τον κύκλο ανάπτυξης και διάλυσης των ηπειρωτικών στρωμάτων πάγου ακολουθώντας τους κύκλους του Μιλάνκοβιτς και τις σχετιζόμενες κλιματικές και περιβαλλοντικές αλλαγές.[2][3]
