Το συνθετικό διαμάντι, (ονομάζεται επίσης εργαστηριακό διαμάντι, τεχνητό διαμάντι, ή καλλιεργημένο διαμάντι)[1] είναι διαμάντι που παράγεται σε ελεγχόμενη τεχνολογική διαδικασία (σε αντίθεση με ενα φυσικά σχηματισμένο διαμάντι, το οποίο δημιουργείται μέσω γεωλογικών διεργασιών και λαμβάνεται με εξόρυξη). Σε αντίθεση με τις απομιμήσεις διαμαντιών από επιφανειακά παρόμοια μη διαμαντένια υλικά, τα συνθετικά διαμάντια αποτελούνται από το ίδιο υλικό με τα φυσικά σχηματισμένα διαμάντια - καθαρό άνθρακα κρυσταλλοποιημένο σε ισοτροπική τρισδιάστατη μορφή - και μοιράζονται τις ίδιες χημικές και φυσικές ιδιότητες. Από το 2023 το βαρύτερο συνθετικό διαμάντι που κατασκευάστηκε ποτέ ζυγίζει 30,18 ct (6,0 g) ενώ το βαρύτερο φυσικό διαμάντι που βρέθηκε ποτέ ζυγίζει 3167 ct (633,4 g)[2]

Συνθετικά διαμάντια, τα οποία έχουν διαφορετική αποχρώση λόγω της διαφορετικής περιεκτικότητας σε ακαθαρσίες αζώτου. Τα κίτρινα διαμάντια λαμβάνονται με υψηλότερη περιεκτικότητα σε άζωτο στο πλέγμα του άνθρακα, ενώ τα διαφανή διαμάντια προέρχονται μόνο από καθαρό άνθρακα. Το μικρότερο μέγεθος του κίτρινου διαμάντι είναι περίπου 0,3 mm

Τεχνολογίες παραγωγής

Υπάρχουν διάφορες μέθοδοι που χρησιμοποιούνται για την παραγωγή συνθετικών διαμαντιών. Η αρχική μέθοδος χρησιμοποιεί υψηλή πίεση και υψηλή θερμοκρασία (HPHT) και εξακολουθεί να χρησιμοποιείται ευρέως λόγω του σχετικά χαμηλού κόστους της. Η διαδικασία περιλαμβάνει μεγάλες πρέσες που μπορεί να ζυγίζουν εκατοντάδες τόνους για την παραγωγή πίεσης 5 GPa (730.000 psi) στους 1.500 °C (2.730 °F). Η δεύτερη μέθοδος, χρησιμοποιεί τη χημική εναπόθεση ατμών (CVD), δημιουργεί ένα πλάσμα άνθρακα πάνω από ένα υπόστρωμα στο οποίο τα άτομα άνθρακα εναποτίθενται για να σχηματίσουν διαμάντι.
