Ομοβροντία από το πρωτοπόρο Θ/Κ Αϊόβα

Με τη διεθνή ονομασία Ληντ Σηπ, εκ του αγγλικού όρου “Lead ship”, και στην ελληνική γλώσσα Πρωτοπόρο πλοίο, ή Πρώτο πλοίο, ή Πλοίο οδηγός, καθιερώθηκε να ονομάζεται στη ναυπηγική και στον ναυτιλιακό χώρο γενικότερα το πλοίο εκείνο που επί των ναυπηγικών του σχεδίων ακολουθείται η ναυπήγηση και καθέλκυση άλλων ομοίων προς αυτό πλοίων χωρίς σπουδαία παρέκκλιση, (ναυπηγική, ή διαταξική), καθιστώντας αυτά σε ενιαία κατά ναυπήγηση κλάση πλοίων.

Κάθε τέτοια σειρά ναυπηγούμενων πλοίων, κλάση, λαμβάνει την ονομασία του «πρωτοπόρου πλοίου», ή πλοίου οδηγού.

Για παράδειγμα, το αγγλικό θωρηκτό HMS Dreadnought (1906) ήταν το «Ληντ σηπ» της ομώνυμης κλάσης, Ντρέντνωτ , ή το αεροπλανοφόρο Φόρεσταλ, ήταν το «πρωτοπόρο πλοίο» της ομώνυμης επίσης κλάσης Φόρεσταλ.

Η ονομασία "πρωτοπόρο πλοίο" δίδεται σε αντιδιαστολή με το πρότυπο σκάφος Νηογνωμόνων, που δεν θα πρέπει να συγχέονται.
