Καραβανσεράι

Το καραβανσεράι (περσικά: کاروانسرای) ήταν πανδοχείο, όπου οι ταξιδιώτες (καραβάνι) μπορούσαν να ξεκουραστούν και να ανακάμψουν από το ταξίδι της ημέρας.[1]

Ο Pouqueville (1826, σελ. 93) μεταξύ άλλων σημειώνει ότι[2]:


«Τα Χάνια ως καταφύγια ή τα Καραβάν Σαράι (ανάκτορο των Καραβανιών), είναι η «Stabularia» των Ρωμαίων και τα Πανδοχεία των Ελλήνων. Ο επικεφαλής αυτών των εγκαταστάσεων όταν πουλούσε κρασί ονομάζονταν «Caupo» (Πανδοχέας). Ο Πλάτων αποκαλεί αυτά τα είδη Πανδοχείων «Καπήλους». Οι γυναίκες που στεγάζουν και ταΐζουν τους ταξιδιώτες ονομάζονται Stabulariae από τον Άγιο Αυγουστίνο. Σ’αυτά υπήρχαν ειδικές τιμές για το κατάλυμα, για το στάβλο και για το φαγητό.»


Τα καραβανσεράι υποστήριξαν τη ροή του εμπορίου, των πληροφοριών και των ανθρώπων σε ολόκληρο το δίκτυο εμπορικών οδών που κάλυπτε την Ασία, τη Βόρεια Αφρική και τη Νοτιοανατολική Ευρώπη, ειδικά κατά μήκος του δρόμου του μεταξιού.
