Ζωτική ενέργεια (στα λατινικά vis vitalis) ονομάζεται η ενέργεια στην οποία οφείλεται το φαινόμενο της ζωής. Ο όρος είναι πλέον παρωχημένος και δεν χρησιμοποιείται, εξ αιτίας της ανάπτυξης της βιοχημείας.

Τους προηγούμενους αιώνες πίστευαν ότι η δράση των ζωντανών οργανισμών οφείλεται σε ένα είδος ενέργειας διαφορετικό από τα είδη ενέργειας που συναντώνται εκτός των ζωντανών οργανισμών. Επιπλέον, αυτό το είδος ενέργειας συντηρούσε τη ζωή.

Σταδιακά αυτή η άποψη υποχώρησε έναντι των υποστηρικτών των βιοχημικών αντιδράσεων. Σύμφωνα με τους τελευταίους η δράση των ζωντανών οργανισμών είναι αποτέλεσμα εσωτερικών μετατροπών ενέργειας και κυρίως της χημικής ενέργειας, η οποία προσλαμβάνεται από τον οργανισμό μέσω της τροφής. Επιπλέον, αυτές οι μετατροπές υπακούουν στους ίδιους νόμους που υπακούουν και τα υπόλοιπα χημικά και φυσικά φαινόμενα (ενοποίηση ανόργανης και οργανικής χημείας).
