Ο άγιος Σάββας ο Γότθος έζησε κατά το β΄ μισό του 4ου αιώνα. Κατά την παράδοση αναφέρεται ως ζηλωτής της Χριστιανικής πίστεως που κατάφερε να προσελκύσει πολλούς συμπατριώτες του στο Χριστιανισμό. Κατά το διωγμό εναντίον των Χριστιανών του ηγεμόνα των Γότθων Αθαναρίχου συνελήφθη και βασανίστηκε για να απαρνηθεί το Χριστιανισμό. Τελικά το 372, σε ηλικία 38 ετών, κρεμάστηκε από δοκάρι του σπιτιού του. Το πτώμα του μεταφέρθηκε στην Καισάρεια της Καππαδοκίας. Τα του μαρτυρίου του αναφέρονται σε επιστολές του Μεγάλου Βασιλείου. Από την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία η μνήμη του τιμάται στις 12 Απριλίου. Στη ρωσική εκκλησία η μνήμη του τιμάται στις 15 Απριλίου. Η ακολουθία του έχει συνταχθεί από τον Ιωσήφ τον Υμνογράφο.
