Τα Windows Neptune ήταν μια ακυρωθείσα έκδοση των Windows. Κυκλοφόρησαν στις 27 Δεκεμβρίου του 1999[1] και βασιζόταν στα Windows 2000. Ήταν η πρώτη έκδοση των Windows που ήταν σχεδιασμένη στον κώδικα των Windows NT και αντικατέστησε τις εκδόσεις Windows 9x.[2]

Τα Neptune μοιάζουν σε μεγάλο βαθμό σαν τα Windows 2000, αλλά μερικά από τα νέα χαρακτηριστικά που εισήχθησαν, όπως το τείχος προστασίας, αργότερα ενσωματώθηκαν στα Windows XP ως το Τείχος προστασίας των Windows. Τα Neptune εισήγαγαν μια οθόνη σύνδεσης παρόμοια με εκείνη που χρησιμοποιείται αργότερα στα Windows XP. Τα Neptune επίσης πειραματίστηκαν με μια νέα διεπαφή χρήστη που προορίζονταν αρχικά για τα Windows Me,[3] που ονομάζονται Activity Centers, για το έργο με επίκεντρο ενεργειών.[4]

Μόνο μια κατασκευή των Windows Neptune, με το νούμερο 5111, κυκλοφόρησε στους δοκιμαστές σύμφωνα με μια συμφωνία μη-αποκάλυψης, και αργότερα έκανε τον τρόπο του σε δικτυακούς τόπους διαφόρων συλλεκτών.[5] Το Build 5111 περιλαμβάνεται επίσης στα Activity Centers, όπου θα μπορούσε να εγκατασταθεί με την αντιγραφή του ACCORE.DLL από το δίσκο εγκατάστασης στον σκληρό δίσκο και στη συνέχεια να τρέχει το regsvr32 για το ACCORE.DLL[6] Τα κέντρα περιείχαν ίχνη των Windows Me, τότε με την κωδική ονομασία-χιλιετίας,[7] αλλά ήταν σπασμένα λόγω σφαλμάτων από την JavaScript, ελλείπουσες συνδέσεις και εκτελέσιμα για παιχνίδια, φωτογραφίες, και μουσικά κέντρα.
