Κάστα

Με τον όρο κάστα περιγράφεται ο θεσμός της κοινωνικής οργάνωσης και διάρθρωσης της Ινδίας.

Γενικά

Το σύστημα στην πληρέστερη ανάπτυξή του απαντάται στον ινδουισμό, αν και ανάλογες μορφές υπάρχουν στον ισλαμισμό, τους Σιχ και άλλες θρησκευτικές ομάδες στην Ν. Ασία. Είναι αρχαίος θεσμός-πυρήνας της ινδουιστικής κοινωνίας επί δύο χιλιετίες και αναπτύχθηκαν όχι μόνο περίπλοκα συστήματα και πρακτικές, αλλά και μία περίπλοκη θεωρία που τις ερμηνεύει και τις αιτιολογεί. Το θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο έχει απωλέσει την αρχική του σημασία και δύναμη, ωστόσο πολλές από τις πρακτικές του ισχύουν έως και σήμερα.[1]

Η λέξη κάστα στην Ινδική αποδίδεται ως βάρνα ή τζατί. Η λέξη βάρνα υποδεικνύει ένα ιδανικό μοντέλο, έναν τρόπο σχεδιασμού της κοινωνίας, ενώ η λέξη τζατί αναφέρεται στις πραγματικές κοινωνικές ομάδες με τις οποίες ταυτίζονται οι άνθρωποι και στη βάση των οποίων αλληλεπιδρούν. Οι βάρνα είναι μόνον τέσσερεις από αρχαιοτάτων χρόνων: μπραχμάν, κσατρίγια, βάισυα και σούντρα. Οι τζατί είναι πολλές στον αριθμό και συχνά εσωτερικά διασπασμένες. Αν και διαφέρουν από θρησκεία σε θρησκεία και άλλαξαν πολλές φορές την ταυτότητά τους, συνεχίζουν να ασκούν επίδραση στους Ινδούς.[2]

Παρατηρήσεις

Πολλές φορές όμως ο όρος χρησιμοποιείται καταχρηστικά για να υποδείξει κοινωνικές διακρίσεις, η έντονο κοινωνικό αποκλεισμό των κατωτέρων βεβαίως τάξεων και όχι των ανωτέρων. Υπό την αντίληψη αυτή των «έγχρωμων καστών», η χρήση του όρου από τους Δυτικούς προχώρησε και στην φυλετική διάκριση υπεροχής όπως στις ΗΠΑ τη Νότια Αφρική και άλλες χώρες.
