Δέος

Το δέος είναι συναίσθημα φόβου, σεβασμού, ή συνδυασμός και των δύο[1] και αναγνώρισης της δύναμης και του μεγαλείου μιας υπέρτερης δύναμης.

Μπορεί να οριστεί και ως εξής «ένα συντριπτικό αίσθημα ευλάβειας, θαυμασμού, φόβου κλπ., που εκδηλώνεται από κάτι ανώτερο, πχ από τον Θεό, ή μεγάλες προσωπικότητες».[2] Ένας άλλος ορισμός στο λεξικό είναι ένα «ανάμεικτο συναίσθημα ευλάβειας, σεβασμού, τρόμου και απορίας εμπνευσμένο από την αυθεντία, την ιδιοφυία, τη μεγάλη ομορφιά, την εξύψωση ή τη δύναμη».[3]

Παρά τη σημασία που μπορεί να φέρει το συναίσθημα του δέους, σπάνια έχει μελετηθεί επιστημονικά. Η έρευνα για το δέος βρίσκεται στα σπάργανα και επικεντρώνεται κυρίως στην περιγραφή του (π.χ. φυσικές εκδηλώσεις δέους και ποιος είναι πιθανό να βιώσει δέος) και τον αντίκτυπό του.
