Τα ευρωπαϊκά βραβεία του Αυτοκινήτου της Χρονιάς (αγγλικά: Car of the Year) δημιουργήθηκαν το 1964, από μία ομάδα ευρωπαϊκών περιοδικών αυτοκινήτου. Οι διοργανωτές των βραβείων είναι, τα τελευταία χρόνια, τα περιοδικά αυτοκινήτου Auto (Ιταλία), Autocar (Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο), Autopista (Ισπανία), Autovisie (Ολλανδία), L' Automobile Magazine (Γαλλία), Stern (Γερμανία) και Vi Bilägare (Σουηδία).[1]

Η κριτική επιτροπή αποτελείται από δημοσιογράφους που ασχολούνται με τον τομέα του αυτοκινήτου από ολόκληρη την Ευρώπη. Η εκπροσώπηση κάθε χώρας βασίζεται στο μέγεθος της αγοράς αυτοκινήτου της κάθε χώρας, αλλά και της αυτοκινητοβιομηχανίας κάθε χώρας. Τα τελευταία χρόνια, η επιτροπή αποτελείται από 60 μέλη από 23 χώρες. Η Ελλάδα εκπροσωπείται στο θεσμό από το 1982 και μετά, με τον ιδρυτή του περιοδικού «4Τροχοί» Κώστα Καββαθά να αποτελεί μόνιμο μέλος της Επιτροπής έως και το 2004, και τον διευθυντή του περιοδικού Στράτη Χατζηπαναγιώτου να αναλαμβάνει καθήκοντα στη θέση αυτή από την επόμενη χρονιά και έως το 2020. Τη σκυτάλη από το 2021 πήρε η αρχισυντάκτρια του περιοδικού Ελένη Ξενάκη.[2]

Αρχικά, επιλέγεται μια λίστα 7 μοντέλων - φιναλίστ, από τα οποία και ψηφίζεται, λίγο καιρό μετά, ο νικητής

Δεν υπάρχουν ξεχωριστές κατηγορίες ή κλάσεις για τους νικητές. Ο στόχος είναι να υπάρχει ένας, αδιαφιλονίκητος νικητής, ανάμεσα σε όλα τα υποψήφια αυτοκίνητα.
