Αλλαγές γεωγραφικών ονομάτων στην Ελλάδα

Το ελληνικό κράτος έχει αντικαταστήσει πολλά γεωγραφικά και τοπογραφικά ονόματα μη-ελληνικής καταγωγής με ελληνικά ονόματα ως μέρος της πολιτικής και της ιδεολογίας του Εξελληνισμού.[1][2] Ο κύριος στόχος της πρωτοβουλίας ήταν να αφομοιωθούν ή να αποκρυφθούν τοπωνύμια που κρίθηκαν ξένα και διχαστικά εναντίον της ελληνικής ενότητας ή θεωρήθηκαν ως "κακά ελληνικά".[2] Τα ονόματα που θεωρήθηκαν ξένα ήταν συνήθως τουρκικής, αλβανικής και σλαβικής προέλευσης.[2] Οι περισσότερες αλλαγές τοπωνυμίων έγιναν στη βόρεια Ελλάδα και σε περιοχές όπου κατοικούσαν Αρβανίτες στην κεντρική Ελλάδα. Επίσης, τοπωνύμια ελληνικής καταγωγής μετονομάστηκαν σε τοπωνύμια με καταβολές από την Κλασική Ελλάδα.[2]

Η πολιτική άρχισε μετά την ανεξαρτησία της Ελλάδας από την Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1830. Συνεχίστηκε κατά την εδαφική επέκταση της Ελλάδας, μετά την νικηφόρα έκβαση των Βαλκανικών και του Α΄ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, με την ενσωμάτωση της Κρήτης, της Ηπείρου, της Μακεδονίας και της Θράκης. Η τελευταία περίοδος μετονομασιών ξεκίνησε το 1941 και ολοκληρώθηκε το 2011 με τη διοικητική μεταρρύθμιση «Καλλικράτης».[3]
