Αδρανής

Γενικά ο όρος αδρανής, ή αδρανές χαρακτηρίζει οτιδήποτε που υπό κανονικές συνθήκες δεν παρουσιάζει καμία δράση, ενέργεια. Ο όρος χρησιμοποιείται ευρύτατα ως προσδιορισμός ή ιδιότητα σχεδόν απ΄ όλες τις επιστήμες και όχι μόνο, όπως π.χ. στη Χημεία, τη Φυσική, τα Μαθηματικά, την Ηφαιστειολογία, την Τεχνολογία μέχρι ακόμα και στις Κοινωνικές ή Συμπεριφορικές επιστήμες και την πολιτική. Χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα χρήσης του όρου είναι:

Ετυμολογικά ο όρος προέρχεται από το "α" (στερητικό) + το ρήμα "δραίνω" (δρω), παράγωγο του οποίου είναι η αδράνεια και αδρανώ. Στην αρχαία ελληνική γλώσσα ο όρος αυτός προσδιόριζε τον αδύναμο, τον ασθενικό. Στις νεοελληνικές εκφράσεις π.χ. "έμεινε αδρανής", αποδίδεται με τις έννοιες του άπρακτου, ακίνητου, ανύπαρκτου, νωχελικού, ακόμα και του πλασματικού.
