World Cup (Männer-Handball)

Der World Cup war ein Handballturnier für Männer-Nationalmannschaften, das von 1971 bis 2010 in Schweden, 1999 teilweise Norwegen sowie 2006 teilweise in Deutschland, ausgetragen wurde. Die Veranstaltung fand unregelmäßig statt, zuletzt in geraden Jahren, abwechselnd mit dem Supercupturnier in Deutschland. Sponsor war seit 2004 der norwegische Erdölkonzern Statoil, der Pokalwettbewerb hieß seither Statoil World Cup. Der World Cup galt als Mini-Weltmeisterschaft, da neben Gastgeber Schweden zeitweise die besten sieben Mannschaften der vorherigen Weltmeisterschaft eingeladen wurden. Auf Grund abnehmenden Zuschauerinteresses wurde die Austragung 2010 eingestellt.

Austragungsmodus

Bis auf die letzte Austragung, bei der vier Nationalmannschaften teilnahmen, betrug die Teilnehmerzahl seit Beginn acht. In zwei Vorrundengruppen spielte „jeder gegen jeden“. Anschließend gab es Überkreuz-Halbfinals zwischen den beiden Erstplatzierten jeder Gruppe. Die Halbfinalisten spielten in großem und kleinem Finale die Plätze 1 bis 4 aus. Die beiden Drittplatzierten der Vorrunde spielten um die Plätze 5/6, die Viertplatzierten um die Plätze 7/8. Ab 2002 gab es zwischen den Dritten und Vierten Überkreuz-Platzierungsspiele, deren Teilnehmer die Plätze 5 bis 8 ausspielten.
