Wilfred Beckerman

Wilfred Beckerman (* 19. Mai 1925 in London; † 18. April 2020) war ein britischer Wirtschaftswissenschaftler und Hochschullehrer.[1]

Leben und Wirken

Wilfred Beckerman studierte nach seinem Militärdienst während des Zweiten Weltkriegs bei der Royal Navy Wirtschaftswissenschaft an der University of Cambridge. Dort erwarb er 1948 den Bachelor- und 1951 den Magistergrad. Im gleichen Jahr (1951) promovierte er zum Ph.D. Von 1950 bis 1952 war er Dozent an der University of Nottingham. Bis 1961 war er als leitender Wirtschaftsberater bei der Organization for European Economic Co-operation (OEEC, der Vorläuferorganisation der OECD) tätig. Anschließend arbeitete er bis 1964 beim National Institute of Economic and Social Research in London. Von 1964 bis 1969 und von 1975 bis 1992 war er Hochschullehrer bzw. Professor an der University of Oxford (Balliol College), unterbrochen von einer Professur für Wirtschaftswissenschaft am University College London von 1969 bis 1975. Auch nach seiner Emeritierung 1992 gab er Lehrveranstaltungen. Gastprofessuren bzw. Forschungsaufenthalte hatte Beckerman in Paris, Dijon und Aix-Marseilles sowie Washington, D.C. inne. Als Berater war er außerdem für die OECD, die ILO und die Weltbank tätig.

In seinen Veröffentlichungen beschäftigte sich Wilfred Beckerman mit der britischen Wirtschaftsentwicklung, dem Wirtschaftswachstum, dem Wohlfahrtsstaat und der Umweltkatastrophe, wobei er skeptisch-kritisch mit dem Denken der Grünen umging.
