Walter Freiwald (* 1907 in Marburg an der Lahn; † 1997) war ein deutscher Architekt und hessischer Baubeamter, stilistisch zählen seine wichtigsten Werke zum Funktionalismus der Nachkriegsmoderne.

Leben und Wirken

Freiwald gehörte 1949 zu den Initiatoren der Wiedergründung des Bundes Deutscher Architekten (BDA), persönlichen Kontakt pflegte er zu Marburger Intellektuellen und Literaten seiner Zeit wie José Ortega y Gasset und Richard Hamann. Freiwald galt als politisch nicht positioniert. In Marburg selbst entwarf er 1962 das Studentenhaus mit Mensa. Sein bekanntester Entwurf ist das Regierungspräsidium in Kassel. Sein Gebäude der ehemaligen Bundesschuldenverwaltung in Bad Homburg steht unter Denkmalschutz.

Als Regierungsbaurat betreute er Baumaßnahmen des Landes Hessen die von lokalen Architekten ausgeführt wurden, so etwa die Mehrzweckhalle der Gemeinde Breitscheid.

Er arbeitete gemeinsam mit Werner Hebebrand und Walter Schlempp in einem Architekturbüro in Frankfurt (Main).
