Strauss’ Centennial Waltzes

Centennial Waltzes, auch als Säcularfest-Walzer, oder Hundert Jahrfeier-Walzer bekannt, ist ein Walzer, der Johann Strauss Sohn zugeschrieben wird. Das Werk wurde möglicherweise im Sommer 1876 in Philadelphia erstmals aufgeführt.

Anmerkungen

Dieser Walzer gibt Rätsel auf. Zum einen ist es zweifelhaft ob der Wiener Walzerkönig überhaupt etwas mit diesem Werk zu tun hat. Es könnte sein, dass ein Unbekannter das Werk komponiert und im Namen von Strauss veröffentlicht hat. Dafür spricht die, gegenüber anderen Strauss Werken mindere musikalische Qualität des Werkes. Eine andere Möglichkeit wäre, dass jemand den Walzer aus Strauss Motiven zusammengestellt hat. Letztlich gibt es auch noch die ebenfalls nicht nachweisbare aber eher unwahrscheinliche Möglichkeit, dass das Werk doch von Strauss stammt. In diesem Falle geht man von der Theorie aus, dass das Werk anlässlich der 100 Jahr Feier der Unabhängigkeitserklärung der Vereinigten Staaten im Jahr 1876 verfasst worden sei. Allerdings gibt es auch darüber keine belastbaren Beweise. In Wien wurde der Walzer jedenfalls nicht herausgegeben (verlegt) und anscheinend auch nicht aufgeführt. Die Druckausgabe des Werkes erschien im Verlag von W.H. Cundy in Boston mit einer Widmung zum 100. Jahrestag der amerikanischen Unabhängigkeit. Diese Widmung von Strauss könnte diesem, wie der gesamte Walzer, aber auch nur zugeschrieben worden sein (siehe oben).

Die Spieldauer beträgt auf der unter Einzelnachweisen angeführten CD 6 Minuten und 22 Sekunden. Je nach der musikalischen Auffassung des Dirigenten kann sich diese Zeit um bis zu etwa einer Minute plus oder minus verändern.[1]
