Steam ist ein Musikalbum von Archie Shepp. Die am 14. Mai 1976 auf dem Festival Jazz Ost-West in Nürnberg entstandenen Aufnahmen erschienen 1976 auf Enja, in den Vereinigten Staaten auf Inner City Records.

Hintergrund

Der Saxophonist Archie Shepp (der hier auch Piano spielt) nahm das Album in Triobesetzung mit Cameron Brown und Beaver Harris auf. Das Trio spielt drei längere Kompositionen, Duke Ellingtons „Solitude“, Cal Masseys „A Message from Trane“ und Shepps eigenes Stück „Steam“.

Rezeption

Scott Yanow verlieh dem Album in Allmusic vier Sterne und schrieb, auf diesem farbenfrohen Livealbum würde Archie Shepp auf dem Tenorsaxophon und etwas auf seinem eher schlichten Klavier spielen. Trotz eines spärlich [besetzten] Trio mit Bassist Cameron Brown und Schlagzeuger Beaver Harris würde der avantgardistische Innovator auch in seiner für ihn recht späten Phase noch recht stark klingen. Dabei zeige er seinen charakteristischen, rauen Ton und einige für ihn typisch emotionale Ideen.[2]
