Rara avis

Die rara avis ist eine aus dem lateinischen stammende Metapher aus der Bildungssprache und bedeutet „ein seltener Vogel“ im wörtlichen und übertragenen Sinne. Damit ist eine Person oder Sache gemeint, die sehr selten in einem bestimmten Umfeld auftaucht, so wie ein Irrgast unter den heimischen Vögeln.

Bei Horaz ist der seltene Vogel ein gebratener Pfau.[1] Persius verwendet die Metapher in den Satiren (Saturae I, 46). Juvenal erweitert sie (Satiren VI, 161) um das Bild des „schwarzen Schwans“: rara avis in terris, nigroque simillima cygno („ein seltener Vogel in allen Ländern, am ähnlichsten einem schwarzen Schwan“). Gemeint ist die perfekte Ehefrau. Schwarze Schwäne waren damals in Europa unbekannt. In der Folge spricht Juvenal (Satiren VII, 202) auch vom „weißen Raben“: corvo quoque rarior albo („seltener als ein weißer Rabe“).

Martin Luther gebraucht die entsprechende Metapher im Deutschen 1523 in seiner Schrift Von weltlicher Obrigkeit: Und solt wissen, das von anbegyn der wellt gar eyn seltzam vogel ist umb eyn klugen fursten („und du sollst wissen, dass seit Anbeginn der Welt ein kluger Fürst ein seltener Vogel ist“). Auch Erasmus von Rotterdam gebraucht den Ausdruck in seinen Colloquia familiaria: Sic olim rara avis erat abbas indoctus, nunc nihil est vulgatius, was Justus Alberti 1545 so übersetzte: „Also war auch vorzeyten ein ungelerter abt ein seltzam vogel. Nu aber ist nichts gemeiner und gewonlicher“. Wie bei Luther bedeutet „seltzam vogel“ auch hier „seltener Vogel“.
