Der Name ist bretonischen Ursprungs.[1] In der bretonischen Sprache bedeutet er „Schmied“[2] (in modernem Bretonisch: gov; dieselbe Wurzel weisen u. a. die keltischen Schmiedegottheiten und Sagengestalten Govannon, Goibniu, Gobanos auf).
