John Beaufort, 1. Duke of Somerset KG (* 1404; † 27. Mai 1444) war ein englischer Adliger aus dem Haus Beaufort.

Er war der zweite Sohn von John Beaufort, 1. Earl of Somerset und Margaret Holland. Er folgte 1418 seinem älteren Bruder Henry als 3. Earl of Somerset nach. Sein Großvater war John of Gaunt, der ein Sohn König Eduards III. von England war.

Leben

Nach dem frühen Tod seines Vaters im Jahr 1410 kam John Beaufort als Page an den Hof seines Cousins König Heinrich V. von England und wurde später Knappe des Königs.

Seine militärische Karriere begann 1419 in Frankreich. 1421 begleitete John seinen Stiefvater Thomas, Duke of Clarence zur Schlacht in Anjou. Sein Stiefvater, der ein Bruder des Königs war, fiel in der Schlacht von Baugé, John geriet in Gefangenschaft. Seine Gefangenschaft dauerte 17 Jahre, da sich das Parlament weigerte ihn gegen den Grafen von Eu, Charles d’Artois, auszutauschen, der in englischer Kriegsgefangenschaft war. Sein Onkel, Kardinal Henry Beaufort, und sein Bruder Edmund bemühten sich jahrelang um einen Austausch, was ihnen 1438 gelang. Die Zeit als adliger Gefangener nutzte er zum Studieren von Büchern. Nach seiner Freilassung kam er an den Hof des englischen Königs Heinrich VI., wo er dank seiner Bildung schnell zum Berater aufstieg.

1439 heiratete er Margaret Beauchamp. Mit ihr hatte er eine Tochter namens Margaret, deren Sohn Henry Tudor am Ende der Rosenkriege zwischen den Häusern Lancaster und York als Heinrich VII. den englischen Thron bestieg.

1443 wurde er zum Duke of Somerset, zum Oberbefehlshaber der englischen Streitkräfte in Frankreich und zum Mitglied des Hosenbandordens erhoben. Allerdings scheiterte sein Feldzug, daraufhin nahm sein Kontrahent Richard Plantagenet, 3. Duke of York seine Stelle als Kommandant und Ratgeber des Königs ein.

Nach einem Streit mit dem Hause York wurde John Beaufort schließlich vom Hof verbannt. Er starb am 27. Mai 1444 möglicherweise durch Suizid und wurde neben seiner Gattin im Minster of St. Cuthburga in Wimborne Minster beigesetzt.
