James A. Davis

James A. Davis (* 1929 in Chicago; † 29. September 2016 in Michigan City/Indiana) war ein US-amerikanischer Soziologe und Hochschullehrer.[1]

Leben und Wirken

James A. Davis studierte zunächst Journalismus an der Northwestern University und legte dort 1950 die Bachelorprüfung ab. Anschließend wechselte er zum Studium der Soziologie; 1952 erwarb er den Magistergrad an der University of Wisconsin. Seine Promotion zum Ph.D. erfolgte 1955 an der Harvard University. Als Hochschullehrer war er zunächst an der Yale University, der University of Chicago (dort leitete er ab 1957 das National Opinion Research Center, dessen Direktor er von 1971 bis 1975 war), der Johns Hopkins University und am Dartmouth College tätig. Von 1977 bis 1994 lehrte er als Professor an der Harvard University. Während seines Ruhestands hielt er Lehrveranstaltungen an der University of Chicago ab. Der Hauptschwerpunkt der Arbeit von James A. Davis waren die quantitativ-statistischen Methoden der Sozialwissenschaften und die Umfragen am Verhalten insbesondere von Studierenden in den USA. Besonders zu erwähnen ist seine lange Mitarbeit an dem Projekt „General Social Survey“. Über längere Zeit gab er an der University of Essex in Großbritannien Kurse an der Summer School in Social Science des European Consortium for Political Research.
