George Whitty

George Whitty (* 4. September 1962 in Coos Bay) ist ein amerikanischer Jazz- und Fusionmusiker (Piano, Keyboards, Orgel, Komposition), der auch als Produzent und Tontechniker tätig war.

Leben und Wirken

Whitty, der in Coos Bay aufwuchs, studierte von 1980 bis 1982 am Berklee College of Music in Boston. Dann zog er nach New York City, wo er als Musiker tätig war. Heute lebt er in Kalifornien.

Als Instrumentalist arbeitete Whitty mit Künstlern wie Dave Matthews und Santana (Supernatural), Celine Dion (Falling into You und These Are Special Times), Chaka Khan (The Woman I Am), Richard Bona, Chris Minh Doky, Sadao Watanabe, Grover Washington Jr., Till Brönner (Midnight), als Produzent mit Herbie Hancock (The Imagine Project). Vier Jahre lang gehörte er zur Band von Michael und Randy Brecker und wirkte an sieben ihrer Alben mit.[1] Im Bereich des Jazz ist er an 50 Aufnahmen zwischen 1992 und 2022 beteiligt.[2]

Im August 2012 trat er mit Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Carlos Santana, Marcus Miller, Dave Holland und Zakir Hussein im Hollywood Bowl beim Concert for Peace auf. Im selben Jahr gründete er das Trio Third Rail mit Tom Brechtlein (Schlagzeug) und Janek Gwizdala (Bass), mit dem er international auf Tournee ging (Ignition: Live Across Europe, 2013).[3] Dieses Trio, in dem nun Étienne M’Bappé als Bassist fungiert, ist weiterhin aktiv.

Als Komponist verfasste Whitty die Musik für viele Fernsehproduktionen wie All My Children oder The Road to Stardom with Missy Elliot und einige Filme.[1]

Preise und Auszeichnungen

Als Produzent war Whitty an mehreren mit einem Grammy ausgezeichneten Alben beteiligt, zunächst Chaka Khans The Woman I Am, dann an Produktionen der Brecker Brothers wie Out of the Loop, Michael Breckers Tales from the Hudson (1996) und Randy Breckers 34th & Lex.[4] 2014 wurde die Musik von All My Children mit einem Emmy ausgezeichnet.[1]
