Edward Baretto

Edward Baretto (* 5. Januar 1965 in Nirkan, Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka) ist ein indischer römisch-katholischer Geistlicher und Koadjutorbischof von Darjeeling.

Leben

Edward Baretto studierte Philosophie und Theologie am Morning Star Regional Seminary in Kalkutta. Am Jnana Deepa Institute of Philosophy and Theology in Pune erwarb er einen Mastergrad in Philosophie und am St. Peter’s Pontifical Institute in Bangalore ein Lizenziat in Kanonischem Recht. Nachdem er am 10. Oktober 1992 die Diakonenweihe empfangen hatte, empfing er am 25. März des folgenden Jahres in der Herz-Jesu-Kirche von Lolay das Sakrament der Priesterweihe für das Bistum Darjeeling.[1]

Nach der Priesterweihe war er von 1993 bis 1996 und erneut von 2003 bis 2004 stellvertretender Direktor des Knabenseminars St. John XXIII von Darjeeling. Von 1998 bis 2000 lehrte er als Professor am Morning Star Regional Seminary in Barakpur. Von 2004 bis 2007 war er Offizial des Bistums Darjeeling. Während dieser Zeit unterrichtete er zudem am Knabenseminar St. John XXIII und war im Dorf Liza Hill Tea Garden in der Pfarrseelsorge tätig. Von 2007 bis 2016 war er Pfarrer der Pfarrei Our Lady of Lourdes in Kalimpong und anschließend bis 2021 erneut Offizial sowie Richter am Kirchengericht. Von 2021 bis 2023 war er Pfarrer in Tadong. Seither leitete er das Divya Vani Pastoral Centre in Darjeeling.[1]

Papst Leo XIV. ernannte ihn am 29. November 2025 zum Koadjutorbischof von Darjeeling.[1] Der Erzbischof von Kalkutta, Elias Frank, spendete ihm am 21. Januar des folgenden Jahres auf dem Gelände der St.-Augustine’s-School in Kalimpong die Bischofsweihe. Mitkonsekratoren waren der Erzbischof von Ranchi, Vincent Aind, und der Bischof von Darjeeling, Stephen Lepcha.
