Doris Holmes Blake

Doris Holmes Blake (* 11. Januar 1892 in Stoughton, Massachusetts, USA; † 3. Dezember 1978 in Falls Church, Virginia, USA) war eine US-amerikanische Entomologin und wissenschaftliche Illustratorin. Sie forschte von 1919 bis 1978 in Zusammenarbeit mit den entomologischen Abteilungen des US-Landwirtschaftsministeriums und der Smithsonian Institution und spezialisierte sich auf Chrysomelidae (Blattkäfer). Sie illustrierte ihre Arbeiten selbst und auch viele botanische Werke ihres Mannes.[1]

Leben und Werk

Blake war die Tochter des Lebensmittelhändlers Arthur Lake Holmes und seiner Frau Lucy Wentworth. Sie studierte Wirtschaft und Klassische Philologie am College of Liberal Arts and Sciences der Boston University, wo sie 1913 ihren Bachelor of Arts erwarb. 1911 gehörte sie zu den Gründungsmitgliedern des Rho Chapters an der Boston University. Zunächst als Angestellte und später als Assistentin von Herman Adler war sie dann am Boston Psychopathic Hospital tätig. Am Radcliffe College erhielt sie 1917 einen Master of Arts in Zoologie und Psychologie.[2]

Nach einer kurzen Zeit als Forscherin in der Frauenstrafanstalt Bedford Hills heiratete sie 1918 den Botaniker Sidney Fay Blake. Anfang 1919 wurde sie im Büro für Entomologie des Landwirtschaftsministeriums angestellt und unter der Anleitung von Frank H. Crittenden begann sie ihre entomologischen Studien. Nachdem Chittenden pensioniert wurde, forschte sie bei Eugene Amandus Schwarz an der Smithsonian Institution.

1927 starb ihr Sohn kurz nach seiner Geburt. Ihre 1928 geborene Tochter wurde von einer Krankenschwester betreut, so dass sie weiterhin Käfer erforschte. Da ihr Ehemann für das Landwirtschaftsministerium arbeitete, endete 1933 ihre offizielle Anstellung mit dem Inkrafttreten von Bestimmungen, die es untersagten, dass mehr als ein Familienmitglied eine staatliche Position bekleiden durfte. Blake setzte ihre taxonomischen Arbeiten an der Familie der Chrysomelides fast 45 weitere Jahre fort, zunächst als Mitarbeiterin und später als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin der Smithsonian Institution.[3]

Kurz nach dem Tod ihres Mannes reiste sie 1960 mit einem Stipendium der National Science Foundation nach Europa, um die Gattung Neobrotica Jacoby zu revidieren.

Blake veröffentlichte insgesamt 97 Artikel in verschiedenen Fachzeitschriften und forschte bis kurz vor ihrem Tod 1978. Sie schlug 25 Gattungsnamen sowie 818 Artengruppennamen vor. Ihre wissenschaftlichen Illustrationen sind in ihren Nachlässen sowie in den Aufzeichnungen ihres Mannes im Archiv erhalten.[4]

Blake starb 1978 in Falls Church im Alter von 86 Jahren und wurde auf dem Evergreen Cemetery in Stoughton beigesetzt.[5][6]
