Dora Goldstein

Dora B. Goldstein (* 25. April 1922 in Milton, Massachusetts; † 2. Oktober 2011 in Palo Alto) war eine US-amerikanische Pharmakologin.

Leben

Sie wurde als Dora Benedict in Milton, Massachusetts geboren. Sie besuchte das Bryn Mawr College, musste das Studium aufgrund des Zweiten Weltkriegs jedoch abbrechen. Nach Kriegsende wurde sie zusammen mit elf weiteren Frauen zum Studium an der Harvard Medical School zugelassen. Es war der erste Jahrgang, in dem Frauen ein Medizinstudium aufnehmen konnten. 1949 wurde sie promoviert. 1947 heiratete sie Avram Goldstein, der zu dieser Zeit Assistenzprofessor in Harvard war und später bedeutende Beiträge zu den Opioidpeptiden leistete.

1955 ging sie mit ihrem Mann an die Stanford University, wo sie auf dem Gebiet der Pharmakologie und speziell zu pharmakologischen Aspekten des Alkoholismus forschte. Nach vielen Jahren mit befristeten Verträgen wurde sie schließlich Professorin mit einer Festanstellung. Sie veröffentlichte zahlreiche vielzitierte Arbeiten in renommierten Zeitschriften, so u. a. in Science und in den Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA. 1996 wurde sie mit dem nach Elvin Morton Jellinek benannten Jellinek Memorial Award für Alkoholforschung ausgezeichnet. Sie war Präsidentin der 1976 gegründeten Research Society on Alcoholism (seit 2023 Research Society on Alcohol).

An der Stanford University setzte sie sich für die Frauenförderung ein und leitete ein Mentoring-Programm für junge Lehrkräfte. Ihr Engagement wird dokumentiert in der Dora B. Goldstein Collection on the Status of Women in Medicine at Stanford. In den 1960er Jahren engagierte sie sich in der Bürgerrechtsbewegung und war Vizepräsidentin eines lokalen Zweiges der National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In den 1990er Jahren setzte sie sich für die Rechte von Minderheiten ein und war ein Jahrzehnt lang Mitglied im Vorstand der Organisation PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays).

Dora Goldstein starb 2011 an den Folgen eines Sturzes.

Ehrungen

Seit 2019 vergibt die Research Society on Alcohol für herausragende Leistungen auf dem Gebiet der Alkoholforschung den Dora Goldstein Science Award.[1]
