Eine Datenmeile entspricht in der Radartechnik und im JTIDS (Joint Target Information and Defense System) einer Entfernungseinheit von 6.000 Fuß (1.828,8 Meter; 0,98747 Seemeilen; 1,1364 englische Meilen). Ein Kilometer entspricht 0,5468 Datenmeilen.
Die Lichtgeschwindigkeit beträgt 299.792.458 Meter pro Sekunde (983.571.056 Fuß/s) oder etwa einen Fuß pro Nanosekunde. Wäre die Lichtgeschwindigkeit exakt ein Fuß pro Nanosekunde, träf das Radarecho eines Ziels in einer Entfernung von einer Datenmeile genau 12 Mikrosekunden nach der Aussendung ein. (Zur Erinnerung: Radar wurde während des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Amerika und England entwickelt, wobei beide Länder englische Einheiten verwendeten. Es war damals praktisch, eine Datenmeile mit 12 Mikrosekunden gleichzusetzen, woraus sich eine Abweichung von 1,6 % ergibt.)
