Düzce ist die Hauptstadt der westlichen Schwarzmeerprovinz Düzce der Türkei und bildet einen eigenständigen Landkreis (Merkez). Er ist der größte Landkreis innerhalb der Provinz, bedeckt etwa 28 Prozent der Provinzfläche und grenzt im Süden an die Provinz Bolu. Die Provinzhauptstadt Düzce liegt in der Mitte der Strecke Ankara–Istanbul und profitiert von der geografischen Lage dazwischen.

Geschichte

Die Stadt wurde 1944, 1957, 1967 und am 17. August 1999 von Erdbeben in der näheren Umgebung zum Teil schwer beschädigt, das Beben von 12. November 1999 machte die Stadt fast dem Erdboden gleich.

Die Erdbeben, die am 17. August und 12. November 1999 die Stadt heimgesucht haben, hinterließen großen Schaden: 980 Menschen starben, 81 Prozent des gesamten Wohnungsbestands sowie 87 Prozent der gesamten Gewerbefläche wurden vernichtet.

Düzce wurde kurz nach dem Erdbeben vom 12. November am 9. Dezember 1999 mit dem Gesetz (Nr. 584) entsprechenden Erlass zur Hauptstadt der 81. Provinz erklärt. Düzce gehörte früher zur Provinz Bolu, jetzt im Süden gelegen.

Verwaltungsgliederung

Der Landkreis Düzce besteht aus folgenden Städten (Belediye):

  • der Kreisstadt Düzce (Merkez) mit 184.040 Einwohnern und 56 Mahalle (Stadtvierteln)
  • Beyköy (5710 Einw.) in 6 Mahalle
  • Boğaziçi (2846) in 6 Mahalle

Des Weiteren existieren noch 96 Dörfer (mit durchschnittlich 595 Einw. je Dorf). Sieben davon haben über 1000 Einwohner:

  • Yörük (3637)
  • Aydınpınar (2695)
  • Doğanlı (2171)
  • Yenitaşköprü (2018)
  • Gölörmani (1996)
  • Otluoğlu (1837)
  • Muncurlu (1383)

Bevölkerungsentwicklung

Die Stadtbevölkerung von Düzce wuchs von 22.274 Einwohnern im Jahre 1965 auf knapp 250.000 Einwohner 2020.

Ende 2020 war Düzce mit 249.695 Einwohnern der bevölkerungsreichste Landkreis in der Provinz Düzce. Die Bevölkerungsdichte liegt mit 352 Einwohnern je Quadratkilometer über dem Provinzdurchschnitt (159 Einwohner je km²) und ist die höchste der Landkreise.
