Candy Gourlay (2013)

Candy Gourlay (geb. Quimpo; * 1962 in Davao, Philippinen) ist eine philippinische Journalistin sowie Autorin und lebt in England. In Deutschland wurde ihr historischer Roman Wild Song (2025) übersetzt, der das Schicksal einer indigenen Gruppe der philippinischen Igorot während der Weltausstellung 1904 in St. Louis in den Vereinigten Staaten aufgreift. Er erhielt den Luchs-Buchpreis im Juli 2025.[1]

Leben

Gourlay wuchs auf den Philippinen auf, wo sie von 1984 bis 1989 als Journalistin arbeitete. Sie gab das oppositionelle Medium Mr & Ms Special Edition mit heraus, das beim Sturz des Diktators Ferdinand Marcos 1986 eine wichtige Rolle spielte. Ab 1990 arbeitete sie als Korrespondentin in London für Inter Press Service. Daneben schrieb sie Beiträge für die BBC und Jugendbücher für verschiedene Verlage.[2]

Ihr erster Roman Tall Story (2010)[3] gewann den National Children's Book Award of the Philippines 2012 und den Crystal Kite Award für die britischen Inseln 2011. Er wurde für den Waterstones Children's Book Prize[4] und den Branford Boase Award nominiert. Die Romane Shine (2013) und Bone Talk (2018) fanden ebenso hohe Beachtung.
