Bromalit

Koprolit eines fleischfressenden Dinosauriers. Das Exemplar wurde im Südwesten von Saskatchewan, Kanada, gefunden. Der Maßstab beträgt 15 Zentimeter.

Bromalite sind versteinerte Überreste von Material, das aus dem Verdauungssystem von Tieren stammt. Als solche können sie allgemein als Spurenfossilien betrachtet werden. Die bekanntesten Arten von Bromaliten sind versteinerte Fäkalien oder Koproliten.

Es gibt jedoch auch andere Arten, darunter: Regurgitalithe (versteinerte Überreste von Erbrochenem oder anderen ausgestoßenen Gegenständen wie Eulengewöllen), Kololite (Darminhalt) und Gastrolite (Mageninhalt).[1] Regurgitalithe und Koproliten sind daher im Wesentlichen erst bekannt, nachdem sie den Körper der produzierenden Organismen verlassen haben, während Gastroliten und Kololiten in situ in ihren jeweiligen Organen gefunden werden.

Während Koproliten und Regurgitaliten oft schwer einem bestimmten Produzenten zuzuordnen sind, liefern alle Bromaliten potenziell wichtige und manchmal einzigartige Hinweise auf die Ernährung und andere trophische Faktoren. Sie sind daher nützliche Indikatoren für die Rekonstruktion alter Nahrungsnetze in der Paläoökologie.[2]
