Jean Pierre Armand David (* 7. September 1826 in Espelette nahe Bayonne; † 10. November 1900 in Paris), auch Père David, war ein französischer Naturforscher mit umfangreichen Kenntnissen in Geologie, Mineralogie, Vogelkunde, Zoologie und Botanik. Sein offizielles botanisches Autorenkürzel lautet „David“. Er gehörte dem katholischen Orden der Lazaristen an.

Biographie

1862 wollte er in Peking eine Schule für junge Chinesen gründen, verlagerte seine Aktivitäten aber schon bald auf die Zoologie und legte Sammlungen im Auftrag des Muséum national d’histoire naturelle (Naturwissenschaftliches Museum) in Paris an. 1868 führte sein Weg durch die mongolische Hochebene um Kuku-choto und dann zum Hoangho. 1872 war er im Gebiet von Chengde, damals Jehol, wo die Strecke seiner Exkursionen zu Fuß der Strecke Peking-Moskau entspricht. 1874 reiste er für 25 Monate an die Nordostgrenze des tibetischen Hochlandes. Aus gesundheitlichen Gründen musste er China dann verlassen.

Er schickte unter anderem Samen des Taschentuchbaums (Davidia involucrata), der später nach ihm benannt wurde, nach Paris. Der Engländer Ernest Henry Wilson dokumentierte den Baum als erster im späten 19. Jahrhundert in China; Père David entdeckte ihn dort wieder, sammelte die nussförmigen Kerne und brachte sie nach Paris. Auch der Davidshirsch (Elaphurus davidianus) wurde nach ihm benannt; 1865 kletterte er trotz Verbots auf die Mauer des kaiserlichen Nan Hai-Tsu-Parks bei Peking und beobachtete als wohl erster Europäer diese Hirsche. Durch Bestechung der Wachen gelangte David an zwei Felle, die er nach Europa sandte, wo der Zoologe Henri Milne-Edwards die Art beschrieb. Im März 1869 sah David als erster Europäer einen erlegten Großen Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), den er wissenschaftlich beschrieb. Gemeinsam mit Émile Oustalet schrieb er Les Oiseaux de la Chine (2 Bde., 1877), worin er anmerkte, dass er 772 verschiedene Vogelarten beobachtet hatte; insgesamt sandte er mehr als 1.300 Bälger von 470 Vogelarten an das Museum in Paris[1].

Nach David wurden die Armand-Kiefer (Pinus armandii Franch.) benannt, deren natürliches Areal von Tibet über West-China nach Korea reicht, die Davids-Lilie (Lilium davidii), der Taschentuchbaum (Davidia involucrata) und die heute am häufigsten in Gärten gepflanzte Art des Sommerflieders, der Schmetterlingsflieder (Buddleia davidii), sowie der Pater-David-Maulwurf (Talpa davidiana). Auch der Davids-Ahorn (Acer davidii) ist nach ihm benannt.

Am 1. April 1872 wurde er als korrespondierendes Mitglied in die Académie des sciences aufgenommen.[2]
