Allan Young

Allan Young (* 31. März 1938 in Philadelphia) ist ein US-amerikanisch-kanadischer Ethnologe und Hochschullehrer.[1]

Leben und Wirken

Allan Young studierte Ethnologie an der University of Pennsylvania und erwarb dort 1959 den Bachelorgrad. Seine Magisterprüfung erfolgte 1963 an der University of Washington. Von 1967 bis 1969 leistete er Militärdienst in den USA. Ethnologische Feldforschungen führte er 1966/67 in Äthiopien, 1976 und 1979 in Nepal und 1979 bzw. 1981 in Israel durch, außerdem in den USA und Kanada. Im Jahre 1970 promovierte er an der University of Pennsylvania zum Ph.D. Seine Tätigkeit als Hochschullehrer begann 1969 an der New York University, wo er von 1970 bis 1974 als Assistenzprofessor tätig war. Bis 1977 war er Assistenzprofessor, von 1977 bis 1987 außerordentlicher Professor und bis 1989 ordentlicher Professor an der Case Western Reserve University. Ab 1989 lehrte er dann als Professor an der McGill University in Kanada. Hier widmete er sich u. a. auch der Psychiatrie und den „Social Studies of Medicine“ und publiziert hierüber. Von 2001 bis 2002 war er Fellow am Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.[2] Young ist Mitglied der American Anthropological Association und des Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland.

Sein Hauptwerk ist das Buch "The harmony of illusions. Inventing post-traumatic stress disorder".
