Dr. Mohammed Mosaddeq (Persisk: محمد مصدق Moḥammad Moṣaddeq (Mosaddegh eller Mossadegh) (19. maj 1882 – 5. marts 1967) var den demokratisk valgte premierminister i Iran fra 1951 til 1953, hvor han blev fjernet ved et statskup.

Baggrund

Han kom fra en aristokratisk familie, var nationalist og passioneret modstander af udenlandsk indblanding i Iran. Han var forfatter, administrator, sagfører, prominent parlamentariker og statsmand.

Han er mest kendt som arkitekten af nationaliseringen af den iranske olieindustri[3], som havde været under britisk kontrol gennem Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC), nu British Petroleum (BP).

Mosaddeq blev fjernet fra magten 19. august 1953 ved et statskup, støttet og finansieret af den britiske og amerikanske regering og ledet af general Fazlollah Zahedi.[4] Operationen blev kendt i Amerika under dets CIA kodeord, TPAJAX, Operation Ajax.[5] I Iran er det kendt som 28 Mordad 1332- kuppet efter datoen i den iranske kalender.[6] Mosaddeq blev holdt fængslet i tre år og sad derefter i husarrest til sin død.

Han blev erstattet af Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, der nu blev enevældigt statsoverhoved og ansvarlig udøver af regeringsfunktionen. Kuppet blev ledet af CIA-agent Kermit Roosevelt, Jr., barnebarn af den amerikanske præsident Theodore Roosevelt.[kilde mangler]
