Abonnement

Et abonnement er en aftale om en løbende levering af et produkt eller service for en given periode, ofte flere måneder. Betalingen sker i nogle tilfælde forud, men kan også ske bagud.

Oprindeligt var det aviserne, der introducerede abonnementer, men i dag sælges bøger, telefoni, kabel-tv, internet, fitness samt diverse serviceydelser også på abonnement. Kunden i et abonnement kaldes abonnent, og kunden siges at abonnere. Det Kongelige Teaters og (især) Tivolis kvindelige abonnenter kaldes (som regel i spøg) abonniner.

Hvor en aktivitet er organiseret på foreningsbasis, kaldes betalingen typisk kontingent eller medlemsbidrag og vil som regel være en forudsætning for deltagelse i foreningens virke.

I stedet for at sælge produkter enkeltvis tilbyder et abonnement periodisk (daglig, ugentlig, hver anden uge, månedlig, halvårlig, årlig/årlig eller sæsonbestemt) brug af eller adgang til et produkt eller en tjeneste eller, i tilfælde af præstationsorienterede organisationer såsom operakompagnier, billetter til hele forløbet af et bestemt antal (f.eks. fem til femten) planlagte forestillinger i hele sæsonen.[1][2] På den måde kan et engangssalg af et produkt blive regelmæssigt og øge brandloyaliteten.[3]

Brancher, der bruger denne model, omfatter bogklubber, musikklubber, private webmail-udbydere, kabel-tv, satellit-tv, udbydere af betalings-tv-kanaler, udbydere af digitale kataloger med musik eller e-bøger, der kan downloades, satellitradio, telefonselskaber, mobiltelefonoperatører, internetudbydere, softwareudgivere, hjemmesider

Abonnementsfornyelser kan være tilbagevendende og aktiveres automatisk, så omkostningerne for den nye periode automatisk betales ved at debitere dit kreditkort eller din løbende konto på forhånd.[4][5] En almindelig variant af modellen i onlinespil og på hjemmesider er freemium-modellen, hvor det første niveau af indhold er gratis. Adgang til premium-funktioner (som f.eks. spilbonusser eller artikelarkiver) er dog begrænset til betalende abonnenter.[6][7]

Inden for akademiske publikationer betyder abonnementsforretningsmodellen, at artikler fra et bestemt tidsskrift eller en konferenceprotokol kun er tilgængelige for abonnenter.[8][9][10] Abonnementer sælges normalt til universiteter og andre højere uddannelses- og forskningsinstitutioner, selvom nogle akademiske forlag også sælger individuelle abonnementer eller adgang til individuelle artikler.
