Cynllun arfaethedig oedd Tŷ Opera Bae Caerdydd i adeiladu cartref i Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru fel rhan o ailddatblygiad Bae Caerdydd yn y 1990au.

Sefydlwyd Ymddiriedolaeth Tŷ Opera Bae Caerdydd gan Gorfforaeth Datblygu Bae Caerdydd, ac agorwyd cystadleuaeth ryngwladol ym 1993 i ddylunio'r adeilad, dan reolaeth Comisiwn y Mileniwm oedd yn gyfrifol am ddosbarthu arian y Loteri Genedlaethol ar gyfer prosiectau i ddathlu'r flwyddyn 2000. Roedd 269 o geisiadau i gyd, ac ymhlith y cystadleuwyr oedd Norman Foster, Rafael Moneo, Itsuko Hasegawa, a Manfredi Nicoletti. Enillodd Zaha Hadid ym Medi 1994 gyda'i dyluniad o adeilad modernaidd, a wneir o wydr yn bennaf.[1]

Cafodd ei glodfori gan benseiri, ond ei feirniadu gan nifer o wleidyddion a chyfryngau lleol, gan gynnwys nifer o aelodau'r Gorfforaeth Datblygu a'r Western Mail, a phapurau Llundeinig megis The Sun. Yn ôl pleidlais ffôn ar HTV, roedd 88.5% o wylwyr yn erbyn dyluniad Hadid.[2] Meddai rhai bod opera yn ddiddordeb "elitaidd", ac yn annheilwng felly o dderbyn nawdd y Loteri.[3] Roedd y llywodraeth leol yn anfodlon i gefnogi dyluniad Hadid, a chafodd ei wrthod gan Gomisiwn y Mileniwm yn Rhagfyr 1995. Penderfynwyd i ail-agor y gystadleuaeth, ar gyfer canolfan y celfyddydau. Enillodd dyluniad Percy Thomas, a chodwyd Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru ar y safle.

Blynyddoedd wedi'r ffrae, dywedodd Hadid ei bod yn meddwl bod y gwrthwynebiad i'w dyluniad o bosib o ganlyniad i hiliaeth a rhywiaeth yn ei herbyn. Cafodd ei dyluniad ei ail-ddefnyddio ar gyfer Tŷ Opera Guangzhou.[4]
