Roedd Joan Abse (née Mercer) (11 Medi, 1926 –13 Mehefin, 2005) yn hanesydd celf, ymgyrchydd gwleidyddol ac awdur Seisnig.[1]

Cefndir

Ganwyd Mercer yn St Helens Swydd Gaerhirfryn yn blentyn i John Mercer peiriannydd a Mary Ann ei wraig. Cafodd ei addysgu yn Ysgol Ramadeg St Helens ac Ysgol Economeg Llundain. Wedi coleg bu'n gweithio hyd ei phriodas fel llyfrgellydd y Financial Times.[1]

Ymgyrchydd gwleidyddol

Roedd hi'n weithgar yn wleidyddol o'i hieuenctid. Daeth yn ysgrifennydd cangen y Blaid Lafur Annibynnol yn St Helens yn 14 oed. Wedi hynny bu ganddi gysylltiad oes â'r elfen honno o wleidyddiaeth chwith i'r canol oedd yn weithredol dros heddychiaeth a'r symudiad gwrth-niwclear.

Daeth hi'n aelod cynnar o'r Ymgyrch dros Ddiarfogi Niwclear a bu yn gefnogol i ymgyrch Menywod Greenham Common. Bu hi'n protestio yn erbyn y Rhyfel yn Irac ac yn aelod o Glymblaid Atal y Rhyfel.

Teulu

Priododd Mercer a Dannie Abse, meddyg ym 1951. Roedd Dannie Abse hefyd yn fardd, dramodydd ac yn awdur nifer o lyfrau gan gynnwys The Music Lover's Literary Companion (1988) a Voices in the Gallery (1986), a ysgrifennwyd ar y cyd a'i wraig. Bu iddynt dwy ferch ac un mab.[2]

Cofrestrodd Abse fel myfyriwr hŷn yn Sefydliad Courtauld, lle graddiodd MA mewn hanes celf ym 1972. Arweiniodd ei gwybodaeth eang am gelf, yn enwedig peintio dros y saith canrif ddiwethaf, iddi gyhoeddi nifer o lyfrau oedd yn gwneud celf yn gyraeddadwy i'r darllenydd cyffredin:[3]
