Sípia o sèpia[1] és el nom comú que es dona a diverses espècies de mol·luscs cefalòpodes de l'ordre Sepiida.

Pot arribar a fer 30 o 40 cm de longitud. Viuen al fons de mars poc profunds, generalment entre plantes aquàtiques i algues. Les sèpies tenen una conquilla interna, ulls grans en forma de W, 8 braços i 2 tentacles.

Mengen petits mol·luscs, crancs, peixos i altres sèpies. Els seus depredadors inclouen els dofins, taurons, peixos, foques i altres sèpies. Viuen entre 1 i 2 anys.

Gastronomia

La sèpia es troba entre les espècies comestibles, pescades sobretot a la zona mediterrània. És un element essencial en la preparació de la paella a certes zones de Catalunya i de vegades es pot afegir al suquet de peix i a la sarsuela. Menja petits crustacis i llagostes i altres animals microscòpics.

També es prepara com a element central d'alguns plats, entre els quals cal destacar la Sípia amb patates, la Sèpia amb pèsols i la Sípia a la planxa.[2]

Joieria

La conquilla de la sípia, dits popularment escut de sípia, barqueta o formatge de moro, s'utilitzen com a motlle per a l'elaboració de peces de joieria. Aquest material és esponjós i fràgil, i és resistent a les altes temperatures del metall fos. A més, l'os deixa uns bonics relleus impresos al metall que donen unes característiques molt especials a la joia.
