Nen a una incubadora

Es denomina incubadora a dispositius de diferent tipus que tenen la funció comuna de crear un ambient amb la humitat i temperatura adequades per al creixement o reproducció d'éssers vius. Els principals tipus d'incubadora són els que s'utilitzen en neonatologia, les d'ús en microbiologia i les destinades a la reproducció d'espècies ovípares, incloent-hi la producció comercial d'ous.

Incubadora neonatal

Una incubadora per a nadons prematurs o nounats és un equip fonamental d'una unitat de tractament intensiu neonatal. Consisteix en una càmera tancada de material transparent que inclou una embuatat esterilitzat per ficar al llit al bebè, amb calefacció per convecció, filtre d'aires exterior, finestres per manipular al pacient, i diversos i sofisticats sistemes de monitoratge que inclouen control de pes, respiració, cardíac i d'activitat cerebral.

La càmera permet limitar l'exposició del nounat als gèrmens, i la complexitat dels equips permeten també diversos tractaments de vigilància intensiva, incloent-hi teràpia intravenosa, suplement d'oxigen, suport mecànic de la respiració i administració de fàrmacs. Aquest tipus d'incubadores ha resultat fonamental a partir del segle XX per aconseguir substancials reduccions de la taxa de mortalitat infantil a tot el món, constituint un dels paràmetres claus que expliquen la diferència de taxes entre països desenvolupats i uns altres amb menor nivell tecnològic.

No obstant això, existeixen posicions alternatives que promouen el reemplaçament de la incubadora per l'anomenat mètode cangur, incloent-hi estudis efectuats a diversos països que relativitzen l'ús de la incubadora excepte en el cas de patologies greus.

Incubadora comercial

Un altre tipus d'incubadora és l'utilitzat per a la producció comercial d'aliments, especialment ous i cria d'aus, en el que constitueix un desenvolupament artificial de la incubació natural. Per obtenir els millors resultats, les incubadores artificials permeten un control automatitzat i continu de temperatura i humitat ambiental, mitjançant forçadors d'aire, termòstats i temporitzadors. Existeixen models d'incubadores amb capacitat des d'unes poques dotzenes fins a milers d'ous.

Entre les espècies que es produeixen en la majoria dels països mitjançant procediments de ramaderia intensiva s'inclouen gallina, ànec, faisà, estruç, i guatlla, cadascuna d'elles amb temps d'incubació i requeriments de temperatura i humitat diferents.3 Les produccions a gran escala requereixen incubadores separades per a cria i per a producció d'ous, ja que el maneig automatitzat de la producció depèn totalment de l'edat biològica dels ous.
