Mesostigmatophyceae je razred slatkovodnih zelenih algi [ 1] [ 2] [ 3] koji ima samo dvije vrste jednog roda .[ 4]
Ranije studije nisu mogle razriješiti položaj vrste, pa je često postavljana kao sestrinska svim ostalim zelenim algama, kao jedan od baznih članova Streptophyta ili što bliže grupi Chaetosphaeridium .[ 5] [ 6] [ 7] Studije iz 2000-ih slažu se da Mesostigma , Chlorokybus i Spirotaenia formiraju kladus , sa najranije divergiranim zelenim algama.[ 2] [ 8] [ 9] [ 10] [ 11]
Mesostigma su jedini poznati streptofiti koji u vegetativnom stanju imaju bičeve.[ 12]
