Budistička meditacija predstavlja niz tehnika kojima se razvijaju svjesnost, koncentracija, mirnoća i uvid. Budisti upražnjavaju meditaciju kao dio puta prema prosvjetljenju i nirvani (vidi: plemeniti osmostruki put).

Po budističkom shvatanju, meditacija predstavija djelatnost u kojoj čovjek nastoji da prevaziđe diskurzivno razmišljanje, da uništi ili spriječi nepovoljna duševna stanja, te začne ili utvrdi povoljna duševna stanja.[1] Suština budističke meditacije je u sabranosti pažnje i svjesnosti, pažljivosti i posmatranju.

Latinska riječ meditacija je samo približan prevod termina bhavana, što znači "njegovanje" ili "razvoj", tj. oplemenjivanje ili razvijanje uma.

Sabranost pažnje na dah

Jedan od najpoznatijih primjera budističke meditacije je "sabranost pažnje na dah" (sanskrit anapanasati). Sastoji se u tome da čovjek bude svjestan svakog udaha i izdaha.

Meditacija o smrti

Budistička meditacija se kod monaha odnosi na često podsjećanje, svake večeri i zore, na mnogobrojne pogibelji kojima obiluje ljudski život, usljed čega smrt može da nastupi iznenada. Monah tada mora da preispita loša stanja u sebi koja nije prevazišao, a koja bi mogla da izazovu produženu buduću patnju u slučaju naprasne smrti (vidi: preporađanje).[1]
