La xeografía d'Iraq ye variada y abarca cuatro rexones principales: el desiertu (al oeste del ríu Éufrates), la Mesopotamia cimera (ente la zona alta de los ríos Tigris y Éufrates), les tierres altes del norte nel Curdistán iraquín, y la baxa Mesopotamia, la planicie aluvional que s'estiende dende les proximidaes de Tikrit hasta'l golfu Pérsicu.

Iraq comparte fronteres con Kuwait, Irán, Turquía, Siria, Xordania y Arabia Saudita. El país inclinar dende montes de más de 3.000 metros sobre'l nivel del mar a lo llargo de la frontera con Irán y Turquía hasta llegar a les muertes del nivel de la mariña marina, les marismas nel sureste del país. Gran parte de la tierra ye ermu o pandorial.

Los montes nel noredeste son una estensión del sistema alpín que s'estiende escontra l'este dende los Balcanes, entra nel sur de Turquía, el norte d'Iraq, Irán y Afganistán, y termina nel Himalaya. El desiertu atópase nes provincies del suroeste y centrales a lo llargo de les fronteres con Arabia Saudita y Xordania y dende un puntu de vista xeográficu atópase na península arábica.

El permediu de temperatura varia dende 48 graos Celsius en xunetu y agostu hasta temperatures baxo cero en xineru. La mayoría de les precipitaciones asoceden dende'l mes d'avientu hasta abril y el permediu ye d'ente 100 y 180 mm añales. Na zona montascosa del norte d'Iraq cai abondo más agua que nes zones central o del desiertu del sur.

Iraq presenta un finxu importante na historia de la xeografía: una tablilla de magre xeneralmente aceptada como "el mapa conocíu más antiguu" foi afayada en 1930 mientres la escavación de Ga-Sur en Nuzi Yorghan Tapín, cerca de los poblaos de Harran y Kirkuk, a unos 320 km al norte del sitiu en que s'allugaba Babilonia. La tablilla, que mide unos 18 cm x 20 cm, foi fechada como de la dinastía de Sargón I de Akkad nel 2,300-2,500 a.C; l'arqueólogu Leo Bagrow asignó-y una fecha daqué más antigua a esta tablilla,[1] allugándola nel periodu Agade (3,800 e.C.).
