El 10 d'abril de 2018, anuncióse que Netflix desenvolvería una serie de terror entá ensin títulu compuesta por diez episodios creada pol cineasta, Mike Flanagan, el proyeutu ye una recreación moderna de la clásica novela de 1959 de Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Hill House. Darryl Frank y Justin Falvey, fanáticos del llibru, rastrexaron los sos derechos a Paramount Television. Flanagan foi escoyíu pa escribir, dirixir y desempeñase como productor executivu xunto al so sociu, Trevor Macy, pa producir una posible adautación televisiva. En presentando la so idea, vender a Netflix pal so desenvolvimientu, lo que condució a la decisión del so desenvolvimientu inmediatu.
