Steve Calvert (28 de xunu de 1916, Illinois – 5 de marzu de 1991, Los Angeles) foi un maquillador, actor, actor de televisión y actor de cine d'Estaos Xuníos. Foi un prolíficu actor conocíu poles sos actuaciones amarutáu con traxes simiescos en munches producciones cinematográfiques de Hollywood y en programes televisivos. Tomó'l nome artísticu de Calvert como referencia al Güisqui Calvert.[1]

Biografía

El so verdaderu nome yera Steven Stevens, y nació n'Illinois.

Calvert conocía a munches estrelles cinematográfiques de resultes del so trabayu como primer camareru del nigthclub Ciro's en Sunset Boulevard, y trabayaba como sustitutu (stand in) y doble cinematográficu. Ente los sos conocíos taben Robert Lowery, de quien Calvert yera sustitutu, y que consiguió que Calvert formara parte del Sindicatu d'Actores en 1948.[2]

Esi mesmu añu, un avieyáu Ray Corrigan, a quien Calvert conocía y almiraba, vendió-y el disfraz de gorila qu'él utilizara n'ensame de filmes de Hollywood.[3] Calvert empezó a siguir los pasos de Corrigan interviniendo en diversos títulos menores rodaos en Hollywood, debutando con una película de Jungle Jim.

Calvert actuó en Bride of the Gorilla, The Bowery Boys Meet the Monsters, el serial Panther Girl of the Kongo, el filme d'Ed Wood The Bride and the Beast/Queen of the Gorillas, Camín a Bali (con Bob Hope y Bing Crosby) y Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla. Siguiendo la tradición d'otros homes gorila interpretando a bisarmes espaciales, Calvert foi un robot en Target Earth y en The Bowery Boys Meets the Monsters. El payasu circense Billy Small frecuentemente actuaba cuando Calvert precisaba un segundu "simiu," como foi nel casu de Bride and the Beast..[4]

Desanimáu pola falta d'un trabayu constante, y sufriendo un ataque cardiacu, Calvert retirar del cine en 1960, refugando trabayar en Konga, filme producíu por Herman Cohen.[5] Vendió'l traxe de gorila a los almacenes de vestuariu Western Costume, y Cohen viose forzáu a arrendar un traxe alternativu al especialista y actor George Barrows.

Steve Calvert finó en Los Angeles, California, en 1991 por causa de un infartu agudu de miocardiu.
