El Puertu d'Aiwo ye'l principal puertu marítimu de la islla de Nauru, ta asitiáu en Aiwo.

Carauterístiques

El puertu d'Aiwo ta asitiáu na mariña oeste de Nauru, nel distritu d'Aiwo, onde se concentra la mayor parte de la infraestructura de procesamientu de fosfatu de la islla. Ta arrodiáu al norte por viviendes de los emplegaos estranxeros de la empresa RONPhos y al sur por dos estructures en voladizu. Al este atopen les plantes de procesamientu de fosfatu.

El puertu consiste nuna abertura que coneuta'l mar cola llaguna central de la islla, protexíu por dos espigones. La botadura de botes y barcos pequeños realízase al traviés d'una rampla. Tamién inclúi una terminal pal fosfatu, con dos estructures en voladizu que conducen direutamente a los barcos de fosfatu por cintes tresportadores dende la fábrica. La so construcción empezó en 1957,[1] y unu d'ellos foi estropiáu mientres un motín. El combustible apurríu na islla tamién pasa al traviés d'esta estructura, al traviés d'un tubu que va direutamente a los xacimientos d'hidrocarburos de Nauru.[2]

El puertu tamién ye utilizáu polos pescadores qu'aparquen los sos barcos.

Cuando los vientos del oeste son fuertes, la entrada o salida del puertu pa los barcos de pesca y la descarga una carga puede aportar a difícil o imposible; esta ye una de les razones poles que se construyó en 2000 el puertu de Anibare nel otru estremu de la islla, na badea de Anibare.

El puertu d'Aiwo foi construyíu en 1904, pola Pacific Phosphate Company, empresa que nesi momentu tenía los derechos de la minería de fosfatos. La llaguna de Nauru foi escavada pa formar el puertu, protexida por dos espigones y provista d'una rampla a la cuenca d'agua. Cuatro gabarres y dos remolcadores pertenecientes a la empresa Pacific Island Company dexaron a les barcaces de carga descargar alimentos y equipos na islla, un métodu de carga y descarga qu'inda ta n'usu anguaño. Antes de 1930, cuando la construcción de les primeres estructures en voladizu, el fosfatu tamién foi esplotáu d'esta manera.[3] En 1940, los alemanes bombardiaron la islla, estropiando severamente la infraestructura del puertu, que tardó diez selmanes en reparar el dañu.[4]
