L'astrometría o astronomía de posición ye la parte de l'astronomía que s'encarga de midir y estudiar la posición, paralaxes y el movimientu propiu de los astros. Ye una disciplina bien antigua, tanto como l'astronomía.

A pesar de que casí son sinónimos vamos considerar l'astrometría como la parte esperimental o téunica que dexa midir la posición de los astros y los preseos que lo faen posible, mientres l'Astronomía de posición usa la posición de los astros pa ellaborar un modelu del so movimientu o definir los conceutos que s'usen. Sería entós la parte teórica. Englobamos les dos partes na mesma categoría. Esta parte de l'astronomía nun ye obsoleta porque la teoría forma parte de los rudimentos de la ciencia mientres la práutica intenta midir con muncha precisión la posición de los astros usando medios modernos como'l satélite Hipparcos.

Pue estremase en dos partes:

  • L'astrometría global que s'ocupa de la catalogación de posiciones sobre grandes partes del cielu dando llugar a catálogos estelares y a un sistema de referencia d'estrelles brilloses, onde les menos brilloses puen asitiase por interpolación. Los preseos típicos son el telescopiu meridianu y l'astrolabiu. Anguaño l'usu de interferómetros ópticos ameyora la precisión.
  • L'astrometría de campu pequeñu, les posiciones relatives mídense nel campu observable per duana de plaques fotográfiques y apocayá por CCD y dexen determinar movimientos propios, paralaxes trigonométricos o binaries astrométriques ya identificar ópticamente oxetos detectaos n'otres llonxitúes.

Les observaciones feches al traviés de l'atmósfera tienen el problema de la inestabilidá d'ésta, pa evitala inventóse la óptica adautativa, y de la imprecisión que aporta la refraición atmosférica. Pa iguar estes torgues el satélite Hipparcos ellaboró un catálogu estelar con muncha precisión.
