The creek has the name of James Wilson, a pioneer citizen.[4]
History
During the Civil War, The Battle of Wilson's Creek was fought in the area between an estimated 5,400 Union Troops and an estimated 11,000 Confederate troops.[5] There were an 1,235 estimated Union casualties (22.87% of total Union forces), and an estimated 1,095 Confederate casualties (9.95% of total Confederate forces). The Confederate Army won the battle, giving them control of southwestern Missouri.[5] However, the Union troops were able to escape, as the Confederates were unable to follow them as they retreated. They were exhausted, and had little supplies.[5]
